I got a USB extension cable for my wireless dongle, but ever since connecting it I get occasional problems?
Don't know if anyone would know the answer, but since connecting it, 50% of searches end up saying 'Internet Explorer Cannot Connect to Webpage'... a refresh usually does the trick but occasionally this won't work and I have to access the given site through other links or methods. It's only since I added a 3 metre extension cable to my wireless dongle. Any advice or fixes known?
Dongles are only supposed to be a direct USB connection. They are not designed to be used with an extension cable.
Without getting too technical a dongle picks up a radio signal. It's antenna length is fixed by the windings inside. You sticking it on the end of an extension lead alters that wave length ratio.
Also using an extension you have to have power to drive it in the form of an electrical supply. Radio waves don't rely on electrical power as such. They are just picked up out of the atmosphere.
So therefore the natural resistance in the cable doesn't help because it greatly reduces the signal over it's length.
If that makes any sense to you.
